About this tour

Olkhon Island is a special place by its energy, which can not leave anyone indifferent. Just here Shamanka Rock is located, where local shamans still perform their rituals and speak with spirits of the past, Olkhon Island is one of six most sacred places of Asia. Just here Zhima mountain is located, where by the legend the host of Baikal lives. Winter time gives us great possibilities for hiking, ice- cycling, walking, fishing and driving! It is a special time for a special place which will be in your heart forever! During this tour you will see all interesting sights and places at the island, including famous Cape Khoboy (Tusk), Three Brothers Rock, Shaman's Sacred places and Kurykan walls dated XII century.

day 1

Irkutsk • Yord mountain • Khuzhir village. Shamanka Rock

Departure from Irkutsk

We pick you up from any point you requested.

Arrival in sacred Yord mountain. Lunch at the road cafe.

Yord mountain is a place where ethnic locals come together for Yord (Yordin's) games taken now every 2-3 years, celebrating the coming of summer and leading round dances by thousands of people around the mountain. Also if the road conditions allow we visit petroglyphs (cave drawings) at the hill beside the way. Then we will arrive to official ice road, going by the lake. It is completely safe, and exciting experience! On the ice we will have several stops with beautiful views to the lake.

Arrival in Khuzhir village. Shamanka Rock

Khuzhir is located in central part of the island. It is convenient to travel to any place of the island from here. Just next to the village is Shamanka Rock, the most energetic place where local shamans still carry out their rituals. We will see many colorful stripes attached to 13 polls, symbolising the most powerful family of Eagles, lived at the island long time ago. This place is still very important, considered as the world's capital of shamanism. Many people say it has special feeling. You will have free time after the walk to the rock. Dinner at 19-00 (included). Traditional 'banya' - Russian sauna after (optional, not included).

Khuzhir • Kharantsy cape • Peschanka settlement • Cape Sagan-Khushun and Rock of Three Brothers • Cape Khoboy (Tusk) • Khuzhir

Breakfast. Start of jeep tour.

After the breakfast we will start our tour to the most northern point of Olkhon island by UAZ, Russian military jeep. It is the main way of transportation here. If it possible to have a dog-sledding ride here (upon request, not included).

Kharantsy cape and village

We pass through the village where the airport served local flights to and from Irkutsk. The airport is still maintained by one family, which holds that mission since middle of 20th century. "Kharantsy" means "watcher", that is why we see great views from the cape. We will drive by the ice again, and we will stop at Crocodile and Whitish islands for great photos at grottens and ice formations. Depending on a year, ice formations could be up to 4 meters height!

Peschanka settlement

We will see beautiful views to the village and old wooden pier made for fish factory, a part of Stalin times political prison (GULAG). The settlement has only one family living all year round.

Cape Sagan-Khushun and Rock of Three Brothers

This is one of the most beautiful spots of the Northern Baikal, the cape is formed from light-color marble, covered by lichens. This is also the widest part of Lake Baikal, about 80 km. From the lake surface the cape looks like huge giant, which was turned into stone by some spirits. We will tell you local legends about shamans (people who are able to speak with spirits) and some mysteries of the lake. Here is also an ice cave with icicles for exploration.

Cape Khoboy (Tusk)

One of the most beautiful places of the lake, where local people met sunsets and prayed to spirits for their kindness. Close to the cape there are areas of stunningly blue ice, which looks so beautiful... If the weather allows, you can see another shore and hilly Holy Nose peninsula, located at eastern coast. There is also Deva (Woman) Rock, which was turned by the legend into the rock to save her from greediness. You will feel here that the lake is really alive. We will have a pre-cooked lunch here, and warm meals taste especially good when it's cold outside. After lunch we leave severe but beautiful cliffs and head back to the village.

Arrival back in Khuzhir

We arrive in Khuzhir. Free time. It is possible to visit sandy beach, rent a bycicle, winter skates, walk around or have some rest. Dinner at 19.00 (included).

day 3

Breakfast and start of southern tour

After the breakfast (included) we will start our tour to the southern part of the island.

Khuzhir Viewing Point

We will see central part of the island from here, including the village and mountains at the mainland.It could be windy, but always very beautiful.

Yalga Lake

The lake looks like a huge frozen frying pan. It is separated from the lake by sand spit.

Kurykan Wall

Kurykan were first humans who were inhabitating the island between VII and XII centuries. After that they left it, and scientists still not sure, why. These people left stone walls at remote areas of Olkhon, one of them we will see and explore.

Ogoy Island

The island is a holy place for buddhists, it has enlightenment stupa at the top. From there you can see most of Little Sea, a bay of Lake Baikal, separated by Olkhon Island.

Horse Head Cape

This cape looks like a horse, drinking water from the lake. It is very close to the most southern point of the island.

Lunch

We will have pre-cooked lunch, which - again - tastes very good! After the meal we head back to Khuzhir.

Arrival in Khuzhir

We arrive at our guesthouse and have free time. Dinner is at 19-00 (included).
