We have a saying, if you want to see a real Siberia, come in winter. Lake Baikal and Siberia are really special during this season. Despite of low temperature, you will have a very warm welcome and so many impressions and emotions, that will not leave you any time to freeze. You will get typical Siberian experiences, including dog sledding, Russian banya (sauna), ice driving, local food and hospitality. You will enjoy hot springs and cold Baikal ice, wild nature of Olkhon island at Baikal National Park and old railway of Circum-Baikal Railroad. The tour combines the most interesting activities available in winter.

Irkutsk • Taltsy museum • Shaman Rock • Dog-sledding center • Omul-fish market • Listvyanka

Departure from Irkutsk city center

We pick you up from any place in Irkutsk and start our tour.

Visit open-air wooden architecture museum

Taltsy museum is alive Siberian village of the end of 19th century. It has a school, watermill, real ostrog (wooden kremlin), several yurts and other buildings of the past centuries. All these buildings have their internal expositions, telling the stories, connected with them.

Shaman Rock, visit the viewing platform

Shaman Rock is a special stone in the middle of the Angara river headwaters, flowing from Lake Baikal. Here we tell you stories dedicated to this special place.

Visit dog-sledding center

We have a ride of 10 km, full of fun and emotions. These dogs never leave anybody sad :)

Visit omul-fish market

We see how Omul (also known as Baikal Salmon) is smoked, and buy, if you want.

Free time

It could be shore walks, skating or exploring magical blue ice, and even ice hole swimming!

We depart from Listvyanka. Longer stay possible without extra fees.

Arrival in Irkutsk

We arrive to Irkutsk and drop off at the hotel.

Irkutsk • Yord mountain • Khuzhir village • Shamanka Rock

Departure from Irkutsk

Breakfast, start of the sightseeing program. Today we heading to the most sacred and ancient place of Siberia!

Arrival in sacred Yord mountain. Lunch at the road cafe

Yord mountain is a place where ethnic locals come together for Yord (Yordin's) games taken now every 2-3 years, celebrating the coming of summer and leading round dances by thousands of people around the mountain. Also if the road conditions allow we visit petroglyphs (cave drawings) at the hill beside the way. Then we arrive to official ice road, going by the lake. It is completely safe, and exciting experience! On the ice we have several stops with beautiful views to the lake.

Arrival in Khuzhir village. Shamanka Rock

Khuzhir is located in central part of the island. It is convenient to travel to any place of the island from here. Just next to the village is Shamanka Rock, the most energetic place where local shamans still carry out their rituals. We see many colorful stripes attached to 13 polls, symbolising the most powerful family of Eagles, lived at the island long time ago. This place is still very important, considered as the world's capital of shamanism. Many people say it has special feeling. You have free time after the walk to the rock. Dinner at 19-00 (included). Traditional 'banya' - Russian sauna after (optional, not included).

Khuzhir village • Kharantsy cape • Peschanka settlement • Cape Sagan-Khushun and Rock of Three Brothers • Cape Khoboy (Tusk) • Khuzhir

Breakfast. Start of jeep tour.

After the breakfast we start our tour to the most northern point of Olkhon island by UAZ, Russian military jeep. It is the main way of transportation here.

Kharantsy cape and village

We pass through the village where the airport served local flights to and from Irkutsk. The airport is still maintained by one family, which holds that mission since middle of 20th century. "Kharantsy" means "watcher", that is why we see great views from the cape. We drive by the ice again, and we stop at Crocodile and Whitish islands for great photos at grotos and ice formations. Depending on a year, ice formations could be up to 4 meters height!

Peschanka settlement

We see beautiful views to the village and old wooden pier made for fish factory, a part of Stalin times political prison (GULAG). The settlement has only one family, living all year round.

Cape Sagan-Khushun and Rock of Three Brothers

This is one of the most beautiful spots of the Northern Baikal, the cape is formed from light-color marble, covered by lichens. This is also the widest part of Lake Baikal, about 80 km. From the lake surface the cape looks like huge giant, which was turned into stone by some spirits. We tell you local legends about shamans (people who are able to speak with spirits) and some mysteries of the lake. Here is also one iced cave with icicles for exploration.

Cape Khoboy (Tusk)

One of the most beautiful places of the lake, where local people met sunsets and prayed to spirits for their kindness. Close to the cape there are areas of stunningly blue ice, which looks so beautiful... If the weather allows, you can see another shore and hilly Holy Nose peninsula, located at eastern coast. There is also Deva (Woman) Rock, which was turned by the legend into the rock to save her from greediness. You feel here that the lake is really alive. We have a pre-cooked lunch here, and warm meals taste especially good when it's cold outside. After lunch we leave severe but beautiful cliffs and head back to the village.

Arrival back in Khuzhir

We arrive in Khuzhir. Free time. It is possible to visit sandy beach, rent a bicycle, winter skates, walk around or have some rest. Dinner at 19.00 (included).

day 4

Khuzhir • Ogoy island • Irkutsk

Departure to Irkutsk

After the breakfast (included) we have a hovercraft ride to the mainland. It is 1,5 hour ride with a stop at Ogoy island. It's a must-do experience at the lake.

Departure to Irkutsk

Departing back to the civilisation, but just for an evening. Stop for a lunch on the way (not included).

We arrive in Irkutsk and drop you off at the hotel. Free time.

day 5

Irkutsk • Transsiberian railway • village of Staraya Angasolka • Circum-Baikal Railway • Arshan settlement

Departure from Irkutsk

Today we will cross Lake Baikal on foot in this tour. It is a great experience, it is a must-do activity during winter for everybody. We will see, feel and hear the lake, its snow and ice. 7 km by the ice from one side to another. We will also see Circum-Baikal Railway, which is a unique monument of the engineering minds of late XIX century. Used to be the most difficult and the most expensive part of the Transsiberian railway, now it is still the most interesting and beautiful one, became a part of Baikal National Park. Visit of this part of railway will give you an understanding of architecture and construction solutions of that days, and the feel of unique nature of the lake. We go downhill through the forest, following the river of Angasolka till its connection with the lake. It is a small village there, used to build for railway workers. Then we turn to the lake iced surface. We depart from Irkutsk by minivan.

Arrival in the starting point of trekking

From here we start walking part of the tour. We go downhill from the new line of the Transsiberian through the valley to Lake Baikal. The way goes through taiga forest, which looks like winter wonderland.

Coming to the lake, village of Staraya Angasolka

Staraya Angasolka is a small station and few buildings, there are art galley and good eatery with tasty pancakes! (not included)

Picnic (included), exploration of one tunnel and old beautiful bridge of Circum-Baikal Railway

After the photos at Circum-Baikal Railway we walk by ice till Slyudyanka town.

End of the crossing, pick-up by the van.

Return to the main road and transfer to Arshan settlement.

Arrival in Arshan

We stay night at hotel in Arshan, a little but nice town at foothills of magnificent Sayan mountains.

Arshan • Buddhist temple in the forest • Famous mineral water resort • Crater of a dormant volcano • Badary observatory • Zhemchug village • Baikalsk

Visit to little Buddhist temple in the forest

First we visit tiny Buddhist temple in the forest, which looks special around gorgeous mountains.

Arshan, famous mineral water resort

All the way through the valley we are followed by high Sayan mountains and finally we come to their roots. Arshan is located right at the bottom of these mountains, and it is a good place for walking and hiking. We take a short hike to the waterfall, see 500-year old larch tree, taste healing mineral water, and , of course, bargain at local crafts and herbs market.

Lunch with pozy

Pozy are meat dumplings, cooked on steam. It is a native buryat meal, symbolising wealth of the yurt (ger). Local cuisine is based on meat, which is one of the best in the world here, because cows here are grown in natural way, not at farms.

Crater of a dormant volcano

Volcanic activity at Tunka valley was not stopped at all. We see several dormant volcanic hills along the road and visit one of them, which was mined. This is a unique chance to see volcano from the inside.

Badary observatory

Badary is scientific station, where Siberian physicists do the research of solar activity. Over 200 satellite dishes move following the Sun all day round. The cross formed by them is so big that it could be easily seen on Google Maps. We walk here, enjoying the Harmony between Science and Nature.

Zhemchug village with hot springs

After Arshan we're coming back to the main road, heading to the Mongolian border pass, and drive about 20 km to Zhemchug village with hot springs, opened all year around. It is also a good opportunity to see simple life of Buryat people. Temperature of hot springs is +55C, recommended bath time is 10-25 minutes. Please take swimming suit and towel!

After recharging of our internal "batteries" we start our way back to Irkutsk.

Arrival in Baikalsk

We arrive to hotel in Baikalsk town, famous for its ski resort and Khamar-Daban mountain chain.

Baikalsk • Tankhoy Sanctuary • Tankhoy Nature Trail • Tankhoy • Irkutsk

Breakfast

After breakfast we depart from Baikalsk to Tankhoy settlement 100 km to north-east.

Tankhoy Sanctuary

Arrival to Tankhoy sanctuary (Protected National Park). We explore small but interesting museum at the visitors centers, one located close to the shore dedicated to the history of Circum-Baikal Railway (in the past the town was a place for the icebreaker ferry connection), another one dedicated to the forest inhabitants. During time from May to October it is possible to arrange visit to the bird ringing (banding) station, which should be booked in advance and it is not included into the price.

Tankhoy Nature Trail

After we have a very relaxing walk by wooden nature trails for 2 km exploring the forest and its inhabitants.

Departure from Tankhoy

After the walk we head back to Irkutsk.
